Good Products with Little to No Marketing = Failure

SMrLz9tUrewA few weeks back, I found one of the most amazing products that I had no idea existed, M&M’s – Pretzel.  Think of two of life’s greatest things put together.  It’s a regular M&M with a salted pretzel in between.  I immediately bought it (partly because Maiden Media’s Kevin Barnes told me it was delicious).  I went on to eat the bag in about 30 seconds.

This amazing product got me thinking about products that are great but aren’t marketed.  It made me worry that because of this lack of marketing this amazing candy would fail.  I went on to YouTube and found a commercial for it.  The commercial is actually pretty entertaining.

I’ve been watching tons of TV and have yet to see it.  I did catch it once before the start of a movie.  I’m pretty astonished at how little Mars Inc. (M&M’s manufacturers) have invested in the marketing for this product that is great.  The Marketing Mix is essential to the success of a brand and its products.  Marketing enables people to be aware of a product.  Without good marketing, a brand will have a very difficult, almost impossible, time trying to be successful.  Marketing generates buzz that gets consumers thinking about the brand and its product.  This thought is what gets people to think about the product when they are in the store and actually purchase it.  If people don’t know it exists they’ll never go out looking to buy something.  I sure hope Mars Inc. realizes it soon before M&M’s – Pretzel goes the way of M&M’s – Crunchy.
